Brussels, 23/01/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Economic and Social Committee (ESC) is meeting in plenary session on 24 and 25 January in Brussels, under the chairmanship of Göke Frerichs and with the participation of the president of the EU Industry Council, Anna Ekström. The session will also be marked by a policy debate on the programme that President Frerichs had presented to the plenary in November, when he was elected as president of the Committee.
There are four own-initiative opinions on the agenda concerning: 1) the impact that electronic commerce will have on the single market (Rapporteur: Mr Glatz, Austria, Various Interests); 2) the exhaustion of registered trademark rights (Ms Sanchez Miguel, Spain, Workers); 3) the freedom of movement for workers in the single market (Mr Wilms, Germany, Workers); and 4) medium term priorities of the ESC (Mr Little, UK, Employers).
In addition, the Committee will give its stance on the legislative proposals or communications from the Commission on: 1) XXIXth report on competition policy (1999) (Mr Pezzini, Italy, Various Interests); 2) Life assurance (recast version) (Mr Pelletier, France, Employers); 3) nominal weights for coffee and chicory extracts (Mr Liverani, Italy, Workers); 4) aid to coordination of transport by rail, road and inland waterways - amendment of Regulation 1107/70 (Mr Kielman, NL, Employers); 5) eEUROPE 2002 action plan (Mr Koryfidis, Greece, Workers); 6) air carrier liability in case of accident (Mr Green, Denmark, Employers); 7) access to electronic communications networks (Mr Lagerholm, Sweden, Employers); 8) personal data and protection of privacy in electronic communications (Mr Lagerholm); 9) common regulatory framework for radio spectrum policy (Mr Hernandez Bataller, Spain, Various Interests); 11) communication on pricing of water resources (Ms Sanchez Miguel, Spain, Workers); 12) measures for the control of classical swine fever (Mr Scully, Ireland, Various Interests); 13) CAP financing (Mr Strasser, Austria, Various Interests); 14) conservation of juvenile marine resources - 6th amendment of the regulation (EC) No850/98 (Mr Chagas, Portugal, Workers); 15) road vehicles: dimensions in national and international traffic (Mr Kielman, NL, Employers); 16) implementation of certain provisions of the Financial Regulation of 21/12/77 (Mr Donovan, Ireland, Employers); 17) equal treatment for men and women as regards access to employment (Ms Wahrolin, Sweden, Various Interests); 18) two or three-wheel motor vehicles (Mr Barros Vale, Portugal, Employers). Finally, the Committee will discuss an information report on EU/India relations (Mr Sharma, UK, Various Interests).
