Frankfurt, 28/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - In an interview published by the daily Boersen Zeitung on Thursday, the president of the European Central Bank, Wim Duisenberg, who repeated that the ECB does not pursue any objective in euro rates and that its priority goal is price stability, affirmed that there were "good reasons to expect the appreciation of the euro would continue" (which, on Wednesday, was at its highest level in five months compared to the dollar: $0.93). "I am certain that correction of the rates will come. The growth differential with the United States seems to be declining, perhaps also the differential in interest rates, if one follows the expectations of the market after the last EDF declaration", he said. He went on to add: "I will not give any sign about the orientation of the ECB's interest rate policy (…). I am leaving the markets to hope for what they want to hope for".
