Strasbourg, 13/12/2000 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a proposal from its Conference of Presidents, the European Parliament has set up a temporary committee, for a twelve month period, on human genetics and other technologies in modern medicine. It has been instructed to: (1) make an inventory, with a detailed analysis, of these technologies and their potential developments, (2) examine the ethical, legal, economic and social problems linked to their development and their use, (3) provide guidelines for research in the field, and (4) make recommendations to Parliament. The temporary committee will be made up of 36 members: 14 EPP/ED (Doyle, Ferrer, Flemming, Korhola, Müller, Oomen-Ruijten, Sudre, Buttiglione, Evans, Gil-Robles, Fiori, Liese, Purvis and Trakatellis), 11 PES (Bowe, Candal, Caudron, Dehousse, Goebbels, Gebhardt, McNally, Paciotti, Roth-Behrendt, Scheele and Valenciano), 3 ELDR (Wallis and Sbarbati as well as De Clercq), 3 Green/EFA (Breyer, Evans and Rod), 2 GUE/NGL (Fraisse and Marset Campos), 1 UEN (Berlato), 1 TDI (Martinez) and 1 EDD (Blokland).
