The largest private Chinese insurer TAI KANG LIFE INSURANCE (volume of premiums of USD 76 million in 1999 with 400,000 clients) opened its capital to foreign investors who now hold 25%. The largest slice of shares was acquired by WINTERTHUR LIFE, subsidiary of the life insurer CREDIT SUISSE. SOFTBANK (Japan) and GIC (Singapore) also acquired shares.
