Brussels, 30/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's Liberal group wants consumers involved in e-Banking activities to enjoy the same protection for their bank accounts as they do for credit cards. In a question to the European Commission, a British Liberal Democrat regrets that "banks are open to the risk of fraud where the victims are the customers". According to the MEP, many banks fail to specify who holds responsibility in the event of fraud. Furthermore, banks are failing to act in a uniform way. Mr Huhne believes a EU Directive would the best instrument to fill the gap, as more and more cross-border transactions are taking the form of e-banking. The Liberal group stresses the urgent need for a Commission initiative, now that problem is becoming increasingly serious: the MEPs refers to a 40% level of fraud in certain retail transactions, not counting the "unintentional "access to the accounts of certain customers.
