27/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine expressed her great satisfaction that the Sakharov Prize had been awarded to the "Basta Ya!" (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.10). In her view, this choice takes on very deep meaning and is an encouragement for all democrats who are fighting ETA terrorism. "Terrorism is not just the problem of the Spanish but also of us all in Europe who share the same fundamental values", she said, stating that the prize "shows Spanish citizens that they are not alone in their fight for democracy, human rights and tolerance in the Basque Country". (The prize, which is now for EUR 15,000 but will be EUR 50,000 from 2001, will be presented during the December session, probably on 13 December).
