Public operators demand rapid reform of International Telecommunications Union

Brussels, 12/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - ETNO, which represents 46 of Europe's largest telecommunications operators, has called for an urgent reform of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The public operators are threatening to leave the world organisation if significant changes are not made quickly. They consider that the ITU should "be a more commercially oriented organisation designed to promote telecommunications services of value for both developed and developing countries". They are concerned at the "exceedingly slow pace" of the reform ITU Secretary General promised "a long time ago". For ETNO, future changes should take account of the new facts in the world of telecommunications and take a more commercial direction and less procedural one. ITU is manly responsible for drawing up international telecommunications standards.
