Second annual report places emphasis on situation in EU

Brussels, 11/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The General Affairs Council approved without debate the second annual report by the EU on human rights (the first dates back to October 1999), which will be published. The Council recalls that, during their meeting in 1998 in Vienna for the 50th anniversary of the Universal declaration on human right, the Ministers for Foreign Affairs had decided upon concrete measures to reinforce the means for action by the EU in this field. This second report, which covers the period between July 1999 and July 2000, is centred in the EU's external action but, in accordance with the wishes expressed during the first European Union forum on human rights (the 30 November and 1 December in Brussels), it also includes a substantial part on human rights within the EU, and deals with issues such as children's and women's rights, racism, social exclusion and justice.
