General Assembly of Conference of peripheral and maritime regions of Europe - Debates on cohesion and governance

Brussels, 09/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Conference of peripheral and maritime region of Europe (CPMR) will hold its twenty-eighth General Assembly from the 11 to 13 October in Florence (Italy). The strengthening of the role of regions, and the state and future of the polycentric development of Europe are two themes to be debated by this Assembly, debates to which will participate, on behalf of the European Commission, Jerome Vignon, who heads the task force responsible for drafting the White Paper of EU governance, and Jean-Charles Leygues, Director of DG Regional Policy.

The General Assembly will be the occasion for the CPMR members to carry out the renewal of the political bureau, the election of a new President, and to gather in the various geographical Committees: Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean and Islands. The CPMR should also adopt several opinions on the reform of the common fisheries policy, maritime safety, the participation of regions in European research policy and transeuropean networks.
