20/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - In adopting the report drafted by its chairman, Kostas Hatzidakis, the European Parliament's Committee on Transport proposed to the plenary that it approve the Commission proposal authorising the circulation of buses 15 metres long in Europe. The parliamentary committee considers, among other things, that the introduction of longer buses would allow passengers to take advantage of more affordable prices, while reducing the number of vehicles on the road and hence pollution. The changes made by the Hatzidakis report to the Commission's draft provide, above all, for the transition period for adapting buses over 12 metres long to the new norms to be postponed until 31 December 2015 (instead of 2009). This postponement should be examined by the Parliament in plenary on 4 October.
