12/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - France and Sweden's ambassadors to the United States, and the European Commission's representative in Washington, Gunter Burhoudt, have asked, on behalf of the EU, the Governor of Virginia, James Gilmore, for a stay of execution for Derek Roco Barnabei. In a letter addressed to the Governor on Monday, the EU representative "respectfully asks (…) for Mr. Barnabei's sentence to be commuted" due to "many and serious doubts" surrounding the case. Governor Gilmore has however rejected clemency after DNA tests confirmed Derek Barnabei's guilt, condemned to death in 1994 for the rape and murder of his girlfriend.
