Parliamentary remarks over Erasmus programme

Strasbourg, 12/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution presented by the British Conservative Christopher Heaton-Harris, the Parliament welcomed the quality of the European Commission report on the socio-economic situation of students taking part in the Erasmus programme, but noted that Erasmus has been unable to bring specific aid to the poorer socio-economic categories: the wealthier groups, despite the efforts to ensure equal opportunities, continue to be privileged with regards to access to higher education. More than 57% of Erasmus students have financial problems , underlines the resolution: the Socrates programme should be used to remedy the financial shortfalls. The EP insists on the need for more targeted information campaigns and invited the Member States to better coordinate national aid to students and grants. The Commission should in the framework of the budget already available, diversify the forms of indirect support (tariff reductions, housing subsidises).
