Brussels, 12/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has approved the granting of EUR 2 million to refugee or displaced populations from Sumatra, the Moluccas and Timor. The humanitarian aid, granted by ECHO (European Community Humanitarian Office), will allow the International Red Cross Federation (IRCF) and non-governmental organisations operating in the field to implement the following projects over the next six months: Sumatra: Supply of essential commodities to victims of earthquakes and reconstruction aid (IRCF); North Moluccas: food aid and distribution of products to displaced persons (NGO partner: World Vision Germany); West Timor: - food support and hygiene and sanitation programme for victims of flooding at the East Timor border (Care UK); - Education of children and young people living in camps and training of refugee teachers (Save the Children, UK).
This Commission decision brings to EUR 24.5 million the overall amount of aid allocated by ECHO to Indonesia since 1999.
