Strasbourg, 11/09/2000 (Agence Europe) - The EP, in a new resolution on human rights in Colombia, condemned the massacre last 8 July in the "peaceful community of "La Union", in the region of Uraba", and welcomed the Colombian government's decision to establish a Committee responsible for carrying out an investigation into this aggression. The EP, which also raises the case of the Irish Franciscan priest Brendan Forde, threatened with death if he does not leave the region and invites the parties to continue the negotiations that President Pastrana is presently holding with the guerrilla movements of FARC and ELN. As for the EU, it is encouraged to implement a fair strategy in the fight against drug trafficking also involving the importing countries. Member of the Partido Popular Mr Salafranca asked if the Commission intends, also to provide material aid to Colombian authorities: we want, replied Poul Nielson, to help the most vulnerable sections of the population and we cannot provide funds for actions we do not fully approve of. The Union interventions should be "tailored very carefully" to the needs of the population, he said (see EUROPE of 4/5 September, p.7 over statement by Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs Josep Piqué over this issue, in Evian).
