18/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is to provide 1.75 million euro in aid to Germany to contribute to refunding the country's spending to eradicate the swine fever epidemic that broke out on its territory in 1997. This is the third and last part of the aid (Germany has already received 7 million euro). At the time when the swine fever epidemic that is affecting England has led the Commission to slap a temporary ban on the export of live pigs from this part of the United Kingdom, it may be noted that the text of the decision for Germany stipulates that "the appearance (of outbreaks of classical swine fever) presents a serious danger for the Community's pig livestock and, in view of contributing to the eradication of the illness as soon as possible, the Community has the possibility of participating financially in eligible expenses borne by the Member State" (see Official Journal L.205 of 12 August).
