2 million euro aid in Indonesia

Brussels, 17/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Commission approved aid of 2 million euro for the populations of Indonesia victims of disasters. This aid, to be managed by the Humanitarian Office, Echo, is earmarked for the following populations:

Victims of the earthquakes of May and June in Sumatra, where the International Federation of the Red Cross will run a project sup[plying the victims with basic necessities (hygine kits, temporary shelters, Blankets, etc.);

Displaced populations of the Moluccas (Northern part of the country), World Vision Germany will supply food and non-food products;

Refugees in West Timor from East Timor, to whom Care UK will supply food aid to counter malnutrition, and carry out a hygiene and sanitation programme for the victims of the floods. In addition, Save the Children UK will handle an education programme for young people in the camps and train refugee teachers.

These programmes, which will assist over 200,000 people over the next six months, carry to 24.5 million euro the amount of aid granted by Echo in the region since 1999.
