Commission calls for further comments on Internet telephony

Brussels, 17/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission, which had launched a consultation procedure in June to decide if and how to update its policy on Internet telephony to take into account technological and market developments, says that it has already received "numerous and substantial contributions" from national regulatory authorities and operators, but reminds companies and other interested parties that they may send in their observations until the end of August. (See "consultative communication"" adopted on 22 June on the website: http: //europa.eu.int/comm/competition/liberalization/oj).

The new communication to emerge from this consultation process will be relatively short as, following the review of telecommunication policy undertaken in 1999, the Community framework governing electronic communication should undergo major changes in the near future, a Commission press release stresses.
