Brussels, 17/08/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a Memorandum, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) recently presented its demands and hopes for the second half of 2000. The first of these priorities remains the revision of the Treaty of the European Union, with the introduction of qualified majority voting for all environmental issues and access to justice for non-governmental organisations so that they can act in favour of the environment. The EEB also places emphasis on the 6th Conference of Parties of the Climate Change Convention to be held in The Hague in November. In particular, it demands that the Convention be ratified by a sufficient number of Member States by 2002, and national policies and measures to achieve, within the European Union, at least 50% of the objective of the reduction in greenhouse gases.
Among the other priorities, we find: - the introduction of environmental taxes; - continuation of the moratorium on GMOs in application of the precautionary principle; - continuation of the integration of the environment in other EU sectorial policies.
