Strasbourg, 10/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the report by the British Green Jean Lambert the European Parliament welcomed the deliberation from the Committee on Petitions during the 1999/2000 parliamentary year. This work is one of the parliamentary instruments of control over the EU institutions and the national, regional and local administrations, guaranteeing the transparency of the implementation of Community law in specific cases, notes the Parliament, which underlines that this is a very useful service for the citizens, even if could be more effective. The resolution asserts that the co-operation with the Commission was on the whole satisfactory. The report from the Petitions Committee reviews: the right to petition, the function of a petition and the problems faced most often, and cites "nerve centre" and sector crowned with success. (case concerning the social affairs, the environment, free movement, taxation and so on).
As for the future, the Petitions Committee is presently studying a number of changes to make to its working methods and will present a report on this issue by the end of the year.
