Strasbourg, 07/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday the EP adopted (210 in favour, 62 against and 12 abstentions) a resolution by the EPP, Socialist, United Left and the Union for a European of Nations groups by which it recalls the request it made in April for the UN Security Council to engage in dialogue in view of lifting the economic embargo against Iraq, "accompanied by strict implementation of the embargo oo the delivery of weapons". The EP, moreover: - proposes sending a parliamentary delegation on the ground to begin a dialogue on the possibility of widening the "oil for food programme"; - says it is convinced that "Community diplomacy must strive for the dismantling of the air no-go area", as well as securing from the Iraqi Authorities a "formal renunciation" of the use of armed forces against the demands for autonomy on the part of the Kurdish people. During the brief debate, Mr. Andrews (Irish, Union for a Europe of Nations) qualified the embargo as "intellectual genocide", stating that the real stakes were in fact the control of the oil and the interest of the armaments industries of the United States and United Kingdom.
