Paris, 28/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The seminar on the French EU Presidency organised for 22 and 23 June in Paris (see EUROPE of 21 June, p.6) by TEPSA, with the "Centre de droit European de Paris 1" (Professor Philippe Manin), the "Centre de droit European Paris 2" (Professor Jacqueline Dutheil de la Rochère), AFEUR (Robert Toulemon) and the "Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris" (Professor Renaud Dehousse), has allowed Jean Vidal, Advisor for European Affairs to the Prime Minister, and Laurent Delahousse, Deputy Director for European Affairs at Quai d'Orsay, to present the priorities of this Presidency and, above all, to take stock of the outcome of the IGC. In this respect, several participants expressed their fear that the current institutional reform would result in unsatisfactory and unmotivating compromises. The debate mainly covered enhanced cooperations and also extended to the future of the EU beyond the current IGC, with some participants expressing their sympathy for these theses of Joschka Fischer, while others tried to be more pragmatic. As far as defence is concerned, one of the speakers said that Europe has made more progress in this field in the past 18 months than during the past 40 years.
