Washington/Brussels, 27/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Mario Monti confirmed that the Commission could soon take a negative decision over the merger of the telecommunication operators Sprint and WorldCom, due to the limits that this merger would place on Internet competition. During a press conference, Monday in Washington, he said that, in the present dossier, he would recommend opposition to this merger. Sprint and WorldCom have, in principal, until the 12 July, the possibility of submitting new undertakings to the Commission to case away the doubts, which remain over the risk of creating an even more dominant position. Though it seems that the Community executive may intervene before this date, possibly during the meeting on 4 July. The American competition authorities share the European Commission's analysis.
