Commission wants lowered ceiling for notification of mergers and that certain operations be submitted to a simplified procedure

Brussels, 27/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission will adopt, this Wednesday, a Communication on the establishing of a simplified procedure for processing certain merger operations. It concerns through this mechanism to allow a faster and less formal processing of merger or acquisition operations that are not susceptible of creating or strengthening a dominant position, notably because the companies concerned are active in very distinctly different markets. The Commission will also adopt a report ion the enforcement of ceilings foreseen by the regulation on mergers. During the adoption of the revision of the "Mergers" regulation in 1997, it was foreseen that the Commission would make such a report to the Council two years after the entry into force of the new regulation (that occurred in March 1998). The report notes that with the present ceilings too many case are still escaping the Commission investigation and calls for a lowering of the notification ceilings. Commissioner Mario Monti will present these two dossiers to the press at the end of the morning.
