Brussels, 16/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, in asserting that he "strongly" believes in the direct dialogue between the two Koreas, said he was "comforted" by the information and "the images on the historic Pyongyang Summit between the leaders of South and North Korea. The EU underlined for a long-time that such a direct dialogue is essential, h said in a declaration in which he feels "highly encouraged", though in general terms, the "wide agreement" reached by the two leaders, as well as their undertaking to continue this dialogue. The Commission and the Member States will very carefully evaluate and "in close contact with our international partners" the results of the Summit, announced Mr. Prodi, adding that, in the light of this evaluation, the Commission is ready to consider future measures allowing to support the "positive momentum resulting from the Summit" and encourage North Korea to continue on the road of engaging the "outside world."
