Eurocontrol intends using Community mechanisms to make decisions applicable

Brussels, 20/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - The provisional Eurocontrol Council, the European organisation for the security of air navigation, invited its Director General, Yves Lambert, to prepare with the European Commission cooperation mechanisms allowing it to use the European regulatory system, to enforce its binding decisions. The Revised Eurocontrol Convention adopted in 1997, allows this body to take binding decisions, but "contains no specific provision as to the direct applicability or execution of these decisions in the Member States," noted the Eurocontrol Council during its April meeting. However the Council noted, "the accession of the European Commission to Eurocontrol will make the use of the EU regulation mechanisms possible to implement certain decisions by Eurocontrol in the EU Member States that are also members of Eurocontrol."

Regrouping 29 European States, Eurocontrol has as aim to coordinate European air traffic.
