Ljubljana, 19/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - Nicole Fontaine, participating on 18 April in the ninth meeting of the President of the European Parliament with the speakers of the parliaments of the countries that have applied for EU membership, voiced the hope that, by the time of the European elections in June 2004, "certain accessions will have already taken place, so that the citizens of the new Member States concerned can take part in the election and the representatives they elect can participate in the procedure of setting into place the new Commission that will take up its duties in January 2005". The EP President also welcomed the favourable reaction to the proposal contained in the Dimitrakopoulos/Leinen resolution on the IGC for the organisation of an interparlementary conference with the speakers of the parliaments of Member States and applicant countries to discuss the major challenges of European construction and the Intergovernmental Conference.
