EP would like EU joint action and wants to send a delegation on the ground

Strasbourg, 17/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution approved in its Thursday's emergency debates, the EP, concerned at the "perpetual postponement" of the referendum on the self-determination of the Western Sahara, calls on the parties - Morocco and the Polisario Front - to collaborate with the UN in organising this referendum within the deadlines set and to renew direct dialogue, under the auspices of James Baker, special envoy of the United Nations Secretary General. Urging the EU Council to adopt joint action in view of working with international bodies and parties interested in the "rapid and correct" implementation of the UN peace plan for Western Sahara, Parliament, moreover, welcomes the constructive attitude of the Polisario Front, which, it says, "facilitates the holding of the EU-Africa summit" scheduled for April in Cairo (on this, see EUROPE of 15 March, pages 7 and 8). Finally, Parliament reiterates its intention of sending a delegation to the Western Sahara, and calls on its delegation for relations with the Maghreb to raise the issue of the Western Sahara at its next meeting with Moroccan parliamentarians.
