Strasbourg, 17/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - During its Thursday afternoon emergency debates, the EP adopted a resolution by which it expresses its concern for the growing pressure placed on the independent media in Serbia (attack on Studio B, closure of Radio Boom 93 in Pozaverac and TV Pozega, and the ban slapped on Radio Tir and TV Nemanja in Cuprija, on 11 March), and, in the framework of its future CASA programme in favour of South East Europe, calls on the EU to provide for a special budget heading in view of creating and supporting a network of independent media in the region. Parliament also calls for immediate measures in favour of the media affected (for example, supply of new equipment), urges the Commission to support independent stations that broadcast to Serbia from Montenegro and other neighbouring countries, and urges the Croatian Government and Croat radio broadcasting companies to back Studio B, notably by exchanging radio programmes, "given the absence of a major language barrier" with Serbia.
