Brussels, 28/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - European Commission President Romano Prodi forwarded on Monday to the President of the European Council, Antonio Guterres, and to the other Heads of State and Government of the Member Sates the Commission's contribution for the Lisbon Summit of 23 and 24 March. Entitled "An Agenda of Economic and Social Renewal for Europe", the document invites the Fifteen to take advantage of the excellent economic prospects in order to: a) continue economic reforms that will modernise the European economy and make it more effective; b) strengthen the European social model by investing in human resources; c) give Europe access to the knowledge economy.
The indication of aims is accompanied by a timetable, according to the "stage by stage" model which has already allowed the European Union to achieve essential aims, from the single market to the single currency. The new stages will begin with objectives such as integral liberalisation of the gas and electricity markets, the creation of a European "single sky", the increase in the rate of active persons, etc. EUROPE will come back to this document in detail.
