Brussels, 10/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - GSM Europe, the European interest group of mobile phone operators, has voiced its concern over the European Commission's announced intentions of regulating the industry. GSM Europe supports the general objectives outlined by the Commission, but according to the interest group, which sponsored a seminar on this subject on 7 February, "Europe's mobile telecommunications market is already highly competitive and therefore does not require detailed regulation". The group denounces plans for regulating access to mobile networks, which would enable newcomers to enter the market without having to take the same risks other companies already present have had to take. It also denounces regulation of the price of interconnection between networks, calling it "another dangerous measure" if not reserved exclusively for the case of dominant players who abuse their market position.
