Mr Stoiber asks Mr Prodi to verify if Germany abandoning nuclear energy is in accordance with the Euratom Treaty

Munich, 10/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Bavarian Minister-President Edmund Stoiber wrote to the European Commission President Romano Prodi to ask him to verify the conformity of abandoning nuclear energy by Germany with the Euratom Treaty. According to him Article 192, asserts that the Member States commit themselves to do nothing, which would risk breaking the objectives of the Treaty, banning such a move.

Mr Stoiber also announced that Bavaria and the Lander governed by the CSU would vote against the measure in the Bundetag. If Chancellor Schroder, to avoid a vote in the Bundesrat, acted by using an exceptional law, Mr Stoiber could bring the affair to the Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe.
