19/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - The EP has approved the report by Van Hulten (summarised in EUROPE of 14 January, p.8), which calls on the European Commission for a series of measures to follow up the second report by the Committee of Independent Experts (which had examined how the Commission works). The EP, however, refused to create an independent committee which would be responsible for studying the way the Parliament itself works, and rejected an amendment by the Liberal Group along these lines (it obtained 128 votes in favour, 17 of which were from the Socialist Group and 6 from the EPP-Ed group, all the other members of these groups voting against). EUROPE will report tomorrow on the debate and the results of the debate.
