Uni Network International trade union movement is launched

Brussels, 14/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - The international trade unions FIET (International Federation of Commercial, Clerical, Professional and Technical Employees, affiliated to the European Trade Union Confederation, ETUC), Communications International, the International Graphical Federation and the Media and Entertainment International are to launch, on Monday 17 January, a new network of skills and services called Uni Network International. The new international will have over 15 million members from 900 trade unions in almost 140 countries. UNI General Secretary is Philip Jennings, Deputy General Secretary Philip Bowyer and Director UNI-Europa Bernadette Tesch-Ségol. The aim of this initiative is to "give our members a bigger say in the global economy", said Philip Jennings in a press release, adding: "after the World Trade Organisation debacle at Seattle it's clear that unless the global economy is given a more human face it will ultimately collapse".
