European Commission’s Joint Research Centre publishes protocol for detecting Bundibugyo Ebola virus in wastewater

23/07/2026 (Agence Europe)The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published a protocol for detecting the Bundibugyo Ebola virus – currently circulating in Central Africa – in wastewater, notably in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The document, which is intended to support the activities of the European EU4S wastewater surveillance network, presented a test based on a molecular biology technique, the validation of which confirmed good analytical performance in terms of sensitivity, specificity, repeatability, reproducibility and accuracy of quantification. This initial validation concerns the detection phase only. An assessment also covering the concentration and extraction stages will therefore be carried out when the complete genome of the virus becomes available.
