Following the announcement by Peru’s electoral authority on Friday 3 July of the presidential election’s official results, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS), Anouar El Anouni, congratulated the new president, the conservative Keiko Fujimori.
She won the election by fewer than 50,000 votes out of more than 18 million voters, against her left-wing opponent, Roberto Sánchez, who had not conceded defeat on Friday evening. Ms Fujimori will take office as president on 28 July, for a five-year term.
“The EU reiterates its support for all efforts aimed at fostering inclusive dialogue and strengthening the Rule of law and democratic institutions” in Peru, Mr El Anouni added in a statement.
At the end of June, the European Union’s election observation mission (EOM), led by European Parliament Member Annalisa Corrado (S&D, Italian), called on stakeholders to refrain from any statements aimed at discrediting the electoral process. “ The EU EOM has found no indications of intentional manipulation at any stage of the process”, it said in a statement.
