02/07/26 (Agence Europe) – In a position paper published on Thursday 2 July (https://aeur.eu/f/mou ), the European association iEthanol opposes any tariff liberalisation for ethanol in the ongoing negotiations on the free-trade agreement between the EU and Thailand. The organisation believes that ethanol production in Thailand is heavily subsidised, while imports intended for fuel production are prohibited there. “Any export can therefore be sold at virtually any price covering only marginal costs, which will land in Europe at devastating low prices”, iEthanol warns. Moreover, the association points out that the European market is already under pressure and fears a “cumulative” effect from the quotas allocated to this product in various free-trade agreements. Lastly, it states that EU producers comply with stricter environmental standards and that competition from imports could threaten around 15,000 jobs. (JV)
