At the end of a three-day visit to Warsaw, Christophe Brico (EPP/CD, Monegasque) and Didier Marie (SOC, French), co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the monitoring of Poland, expressed their concern, on Tuesday 19 May, about the persistent politicisation of the highest judicial offices in this country.
“Key judicial bodies, notably the Constitutional Tribunal and the National Judicial Council, are politicised, undermining judicial independence, the separation of powers and the ability of these institutions to perform their constitutional functions”, they said, calling for greater efforts by all State actors to ensure compliance with recognised European standards of judicial independence and respect for the rule of law.
The Parliamentary Assembly began its monitoring of Poland on 28 January 2020.
Poland is one of the 10 Council of Europe Member States subject to the full monitoring procedure. (Original version in French by Véronique Leblanc)
