27/04/26 (Agence Europe) – In a statement published on Monday 27 April, the Council of the European Union announced the extension of restrictive measures against Burma until 30 April 2027. This decision follows an annual review which highlighted the persistence of serious human rights violations and actions undermining democracy since the coup d’état in 2021. The sanctions regime currently targets 22 entities and 105 individuals after the removal of one deceased person. It includes a freeze on assets, a ban on financing and travel restrictions to the EU. In addition, the arms embargo, the restrictions on dual-use goods and the ban on military cooperation with the Myanmar Armed Forces remain in force. The EU is also maintaining its freeze on all direct financial aid to the government, so as not to legitimise the junta while ensuring that the civilian population is not harmed. (JM)
