20/04/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European People’s Party (EPP) is currently working on its position on activating Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU), which it will adopt between now and the June European summit. According to this article, if a Member State is a victim of armed aggression on its territory, the other EU countries must provide aid and assistance by all the means in their power. Questions arise about the type of assistance to be provided, coordination with the similar clause binding NATO countries (Article 5) and the involvement of militarily neutral Member States. In early March, after an incident caused by drones flying over its territory, Cyprus, which is not a member of NATO, considered officially activating Article 42.7, but then gave up, although it received bilateral military support from several countries (see EUROPE 13819/1). The country would like this issue to be addressed at the European summit in Nicosia, on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 April. (MB)
