26/06/2025 (Agence Europe) – More than 20% of Europeans, or just over 110 million people, are exposed to high levels of transport-related noise, according to a report by the European Environment Agency on Tuesday 24 June. Stronger action by the EU and the Member States is called for. Road traffic has been identified as the main source of noise pollution, with 92 million people exposed to harmful noise levels during the day-evening-night period, according to thresholds set by the European directive on environmental noise. In comparison, rail noise affects 18 million people and aircraft noise 2.6 million. With the more stringent World Health Organization (WHO) thresholds, the number of Europeans exposed to high levels of transport-related noise rises to around 150 million (over 30% of the EU population).
