Siegbert Frank Droese MEP wants to limit exports of Ukrainian products

Siegbert Frank Droese MEP (ENS, German) wants to limit the quantities of Ukrainian products exported, according to a draft recommendation to amend the agreement between the European Union and Ukraine on the carriage of goods by road, published on Thursday 13 March.

The rapporteur proposes rejecting the extension of the agreement from June 2022 to 30 June 2025, with the possibility of tacit renewal for a period of six months. In the explanatory memorandum, he considers that this limitation on the quantities exported should apply in particular to agricultural products such as wheat, echoing the protests of Polish farmers, who have deplored a loss of income resulting from the oversupply of Ukrainian wheat (see EUROPE 13586/13).

He also believes that this extension cannot be made in its current form and that further work is needed to fine-tune the details and better regulate its application. “It is more than necessary to ensure more effective border and road controls, by increasing the number of police officers on the main transport routes used by Ukrainian lorries”, he defended.

Together with his parliamentary group, he supports a clear restriction on the transport of civilian goods and new regulations for dual-use products.

According to the latest figures from the European Commission, the total value of EU-Ukraine trade via the ‘solidarity lanes’ is estimated at around €211 billion since May 2022 (see EUROPE 13584/27).
