28/10/24 (Agence Europe) – ‘Carbon Inequality Kills’: a report by the NGO Oxfam published on Monday 28 October reveals that in one week’s use of yachts and private jets, the carbon footprint of a ‘super-rich’ European equals that of a person from the poorest 1% of the planet over a lifetime. The study shows that almost 40% of billionaires’ investments are in highly polluting industries (oil, mining, shipping, cement). Emissions from the richest 1% in the EU are even costing money, with the study estimating that they have caused a $179 billion fall in global economic output since 1990, for example due to the loss of crops as a result of climate change. One of the major topics at COP29 will be the EU’s participation in global climate financing and aid to vulnerable countries (see EUROPE 13503/12). (FS)
