On Wednesday 5 June, at the sixth annual seminar on capital markets organised by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Stability Mechanism, the European Commissioner for the Budget, Johannes Hahn, said that the EU’s international competitiveness was a major political priority for the coming years.
“We, Europeans, have now to look how to position ourselves in a more and more globalised world in a way that we successfully compete in a global competition, in order to be not squeezed between China and the US (...) This is the key political priority for the next few years”, he told a panel of investors on Wednesday afternoon.
The seminar brought together investors and members of the European institutions in Luxembourg on Wednesday and Thursday. A number of speeches were scheduled, including those by the President of the EIB, Nadia Calviño, and the Director of the Directorate-General for Budget (DG BUDG), Stéphanie Riso.
