Fall in electricity and gas bills in second half of 2023, according to Eurostat

In the second half of 2023, electricity and gas bills for EU households fell after an increase that began before the war in Ukraine, Eurostat reported on Thursday 25 April.

Average electricity prices for households have fallen (€28.5 per 100 kWh) compared with the first half of 2023 (€29.4 per 100 kWh), and have risen slightly compared with the second half of 2022 (€28.4 per 100 kWh).

Average gas prices have fallen (€11.3 per 100 kWh) compared with the first half of 2023 (€11.9 per 100 kWh) and the second half of 2022 (€11.4 per 100 kWh).

Overall, electricity prices fell in 13 EU countries in the second half of 2023 compared with the same period in 2022, and rose in the other countries.

For non-domestic consumers, electricity prices have fallen in 17 countries, representing a fall of 4.6% in the EU compared with the second half of 2022.

For gas, domestic consumer prices fell in the second half of 2023, mainly due to lower energy costs and, to a lesser extent, taxes, which are gradually returning to pre-crisis levels after reductions in 2022. (Original version in French by Pauline Denys)
