The European Commission has launched a 12-week public consultation, from 25 April to 18 July 2024, to gather opinions on the ecodesign and energy labelling of computers.
According to the institution, ecodesign regulations have proved effective in improving products’ environmental performance, ensuring compliance with minimum requirements, and gradually eliminating low-performance products from the market.
The aim of energy labelling is to inform consumers about energy efficiency, durability, and repairability, which notably encourages competition among manufacturers.
A European Commission press release indicates, “Because energy labelling covers the entire product lifecycle, including requirements to facilitate recycling, this legislation contributes to lower CO2 emissions as it reduces material use, extraction of precious metals and rare earth elements, often used in computers, and related imports.”
By gathering feedback from various stakeholders (original equipment manufacturers, component suppliers, users, repairers, and even recyclers), the consultation aims to improve the effectiveness of policies and provide consumers clear information, by covering both the ecodesign and energy-labelling aspects of computers.
The comments that are received will notably be added to the various elements that have already been collected in order to prepare the review of the Ecodesign Regulation that is underway.
