On Monday 18 September, in response to the scale of the humanitarian needs in eastern Libya - particularly in the martyred city of Derna, which has been totally devastated by flooding - the European Commission announced an additional €5.2 million for partner humanitarian organisations on the ground.
This funding will focus on shelter, healthcare, food, drinking water, basic sanitation and hygiene, and personal protection.
Of this amount, €200,000 is earmarked for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund, in support of the Libyan Red Crescent Society. €500,000 had previously been made available (see EUROPE 13249/39).
At the same time, the Union Civil Protection Mechanism is continuing to deliver essential goods and equipment to survivors. To date, seven countries have responded to the Libyan authorities’ request for assistance (see EUROPE 13250/14).
On Monday, European Commissioner Janez Lenarčič expressed his condolences to Greece in the wake of the road accident that killed four members of a Greek rescue team on their way to Derna.
According to a still provisional estimate, the floods have killed 11,300 people and left more than 10,000 missing in this coastal city. On Monday, the UN said it feared the spread of disease. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
