11/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – Five EU-funded films won prizes at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival (Venice Mostra) on Saturday 9 September, the European Commission has announced. Matteo Garrone won the Silver Lion for Best Director and Seydou Sarr the Award for Best Young Actor, for the film Io Capitano (Me, Captain). Meanwhile, the Orizzonti jury awarded Mika Gustafson Best Director for Paradiset Brinner (Paradise is Burning) and Tergel Bold-Erdene Best Actor for Ser Ser Salhi (City of Wind). Finally, Empereur was awarded the Venice Immersive Achievement Prize and Photophobia the Europe Cinema Labels Awards. A total of 11 films were nominated for funding under the MEDIA strand of the Creative Europe programme. The Golden Lion went to Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things. (HS)
