EU Building Stock Observatory, European Commission updates online tool to boost energy efficiency of buildings

On Thursday 31 August, the European Commission announced the launch of an enhanced version of the ‘EU Building Stock Observatory’ (EU BSO), an online tool designed to monitor the energy performance of buildings in all EU countries.

While inter-institutional negotiations on the revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (see EUROPE 12854/13) continue (see other news), this update aims to increase transparency on energy efficiency in line with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

The main improvements to the platform include “more reliable data”, “higher quality data visualisations” and a more user-friendly interface.

The aim is to make the EU BSO useful “across the whole policy cycle”, from target-setting to implementation, monitoring and evaluation for a range of end-users such as policy-makers, investors, financial institutions, the construction industry, energy suppliers, local authorities and researchers.

To ensure that the platform remains relevant, ongoing testing and user feedback will be sought over the next 4 years. These lessons learned will feed into future improvements, including iterative data updates and a functional upgrade planned for 2024.
