European Parliament draft report calls for stronger EU action against noncommunicable diseases

On Wednesday, 30 August, the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Public Health will debate the draft report by Erik Poulsen (Renew Europe, Danish), who is calling for stronger EU action in the fight against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

The draft report (https://aeur.eu/f/8dj ) invites the European Commission and Member States to implement measures to help smokers quit smoking and to follow up on scientific evaluations of the health risks posed by electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and new types of tobacco products, including the assessment of the risks of using these products compared to consuming other tobacco products (see EUROPE 13193/7).

The rapporteur welcomes the European Commission’s objective of reducing harmful alcohol use 10% by 2025 and calls on the EU to introduce restrictions on alcohol advertising aimed at minors and to support measures geared towards reducing and preventing alcohol-related harm within the framework of a revision of the EU alcohol strategy.

The draft report also requests that the European Commission propose a new action plan to combat childhood obesity. This subcommittee will also discuss the draft report on mental health (https://aeur.eu/f/8da ) by Sara Cerdas (S&D, Portuguese). (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
