13/07/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 12 July, the European Parliament approved (645 votes in favour, 4 against and 3 abstentions) a proposal amending the conditions for fishing in the area covered by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) agreement. The revised rules promote equal opportunities among EU fisheries and regulate more effectively fishing activities of species such as European eel, giant red shrimp and red coral. The aim of the adopted regulation, which was the subject of a compromise between the European Parliament and the EU Council, is to ensure that EU vessels outside EU waters comply with the same rules as those fishing in EU waters. The EU Council has already adopted the regulation, which will shortly be published in the Official Journal of the EU (see EUROPE 13188/36). (LC)
